Calculate the score you need

Use this for any remaining graded item with a known weight.

Required score

87.33%

Score 87.33% on the project worth 30.00% to reach 78.00% overall.

Current grade
74.00%
Target grade
78.00%

Required assessment score formula

Required score = (target overall grade - current grade x (1 - remaining assessment weight)) / remaining assessment weight

Enter the remaining assessment weight as a percentage. The calculator turns 25% into 0.25 before applying the formula.

When to use this tool

Not every important assessment is a final exam. This calculator uses the same weighted-grade logic for any remaining graded item, so you can set a clear target before the due date.

Realistic examples

Use these examples to check whether your own inputs are in the right format before relying on the result.

Example 1: next midterm target

  • Current overall grade: 81%
  • Target overall grade: 85%
  • Midterm weight: 20%

Required midterm score: 101.00%

The target is just out of reach through this one midterm. The student may need extra credit, another assessment, or a lower target.

Example 2: project score needed

  • Current overall grade: 74%
  • Target overall grade: 78%
  • Project weight: 30%

Required project score: 87.33%

An 87.33 on the project would raise the overall course grade to 78, assuming the current grade and weight are correct.

How to know what score you need

Start with your current overall grade before the assessment. Then choose the target grade you want after that assessment is added.

Use the weight from your syllabus or gradebook. If the assessment is part of a category, calculate the category effect first or ask your instructor how it is weighted.

Formula explanation

Your current grade keeps the part of the course that is already counted. The remaining assessment fills the part that is still open.

The formula solves for the missing assessment score that would make the combined grade equal your target.

When the answer is impossible

If the required score is above 100%, the assessment alone cannot reach the target. That does not mean you should give up, but it does mean the plan needs more than one score.

Look for future assignments, correction policies, or a more realistic next milestone.
